The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) continues its relief operations for victims of the 5.4 and 5.9 earthquakes which struck Itbayat, Batanes on 27 July 2019.
Utilizing air and sea assets of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the NDRRMC transported food and non-food items for the 1,025 families affected by the earthquake, as well as deployed personnel to aid in the relief mission.
NDRRMC facilitated the airlift of relief goods to Batanes utilizing four (4) C130 flights, five (5) C295 flights, and one (1) CN212i flight by the Philippine Air Force (PAF). It also coordinated the ferrying of goods to the affected areas via the Philippine Navy’s BRP Pangasinan (PS-31).
Since the earthquake struck, at least 3,324 boxes of food items have been transported to Batanes along with potable water in bottles and gallon containers. Also, 626 boxes of hygiene and sanitation kits, 24 boxes of assorted medicines, and other needed items such as pillows, folding beds, clothing, and school supplies were provided to the families. Likewise, one desalination unit, 30 units of water purifiers, 80 tents, 12 generator sets, and various telecommunications equipment have also been dispatched. NDRRMC remains on standby to replenish these supplies whenever necessary.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and National Housing Authority (NHA) also distributed financial assistance to the casualties and families with damaged houses starting 05 August 2019 after the joint assessment conducted by OCD, DSWD, NHA, DOLE, DPWH, and Batanes LGU. The DSWD and DOLE will also be implementing a Cash for Work program to further assist the earthquake victims.
NDRRMC wishes to thank government agencies and private donors that helped provide the relief items for Itbayat, including OCD, DOH, DSWD, PAF, PNP, PhilHealth, LTO, DA, PDRRMO Isabela, Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA), DIWA Party List, GMA Kapuso Foundation, Philippine Red Cross, Cagayan Electric Cooperative, UP Manila-PGH, Makati Medical Center Foundation (MMCF), Rotary Club, Alagang Kapatid Foundation, PDP Laban Cares, PLDT Smart Foundation, Metro Pacific Foundation, CIGNAL TV, Unilab, Stet-VIP, Christ Church Ortigas, Go Share, Operation Blessing, Senator Sonny Angara, Cong. Ciriaco Gato Jr., and Lieutenant Senior Grade Ferdinand Gato.
Likewise, the following government agencies and private organizations are acknowledged for deploying their personnel to assist in the relief mission: PAF, Philippine Navy, Philippine Army, Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF), DICT, DOH, DSWD FO-2, DILG, DENR, NEDA, DOT, MGB, NHA, DepEd, OWWA, CEZA, PDRRMO Isabela, and OCD.
The NDRRMC went on BLUE alert status from 28 July – 01 Aug 2019 to coordinate the response efforts in Itbayat.
