A disaster preparedness webinar for persons with disabilities (PWDs), fisherfolk and victims of calamities organized by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) through the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) gained support online this morning, Nov. 11, 2021.
Pushing for inclusive DRRM, the webinar tackled the importance of disaster preparedness for persons with disabilities, victims of disasters, and fisherfolk to reduce the negative impacts of hazards or disasters to vulnerable populations. “We [PWDs] are in the best position to voice our concerns and identify solutions and resources as we are an integral part of the solution,” Ms. Corazon Bajuyo-Clarin, convenor of the Cebu Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction Network said as she discussed the inclusivity dimension of DRRM.
“We established a platform for discussion and collaboration towards disability inclusion and DRR development in general with the end goal of influencing policies and programs that will create inclusive and resilient communities where everybody including persons with disabilities are secured and protected,” she added.
Meanwhile, Dr. Nikkie Boy Manalo, assistant director of the Institutional and Industry Development Service of the Batangas State University emphasized that the lessons learned from the Philippines’ experiences serve as a motivation to promote more strategic innovations such as academic research, professional training, and education in disaster management.
Also, stories of resilience from disaster victims and disaster survivors were shared by Deputy Executive Director Mayfourth Luneta of the Center for Disaster Preparedness Philippines.
“Isang susi sa story of resilience natin ay dapat kasama sila... Involving the persons with disabilities or ‘yung mismong basic sector doon sa mga gawain mula sa pag-a-assess, pagpaplano at mula sa paggawa ng mga proyekto,” Ms Luneta said.
Also present in the webinar to give their messages of support were Civil Defense Deputy Administrator for Operations Assistant Secretary Casiano C. Monilla and Civil Defense Deputy Administrator for Administration Asec. Hernando Caraig Jr.
